pen & ink drawings

These are a sample of sketch book drawings that I made in the spring of '07. I have three sketch books full of similar drawings that are all done in black ink with a nib pen. It was nearly impossible for me to choose which drawings to post. I just ended up picking a few of my personal favorites. I'd be happy to show more drawings to anyone who is interested in having a look at my sketch books.

birdhouse mini-comic

Birdhouse is a small handmade book that I drew and assembled in May '06. It tells the story of a mother and child who transform their physical shapes in order to grow with their changing relationship. It's a playful and metaphorical story that is told through drawings and dialogue. I have exhibited it at the Mocca festival. It is currently sold in Giant Robot stores. Or you can contact me and I'll mail you a book.

a multi-headed chicken

A recent water color painting. I'm not sure where this multi-headed chicken came from. Like most of the imagery in my artwork, it just seemed to create itself as I was painting one day.

the protector painting

This is my protector painting that I made while studying art therapy in graduate school. It reflects how my training as an art therapist began to help me as an artist to examine my own internal state through the art I was making. The dialogue that goes with the painting is something like the following: I hide myself away, my shoulders curl over my chest and cradle my heart in a cage. Then I feel far away, like I'm floating in my own galaxy.

the protector in a relationship

pretend mini-comic

Pretend is a mini-comic that I made a few years ago. It continues to be a favorite among my friends. Austin English wrote a very flattering review of it for the Comics Journal. The review also includes a sample page from the interior of the book, which consists of 24 pages of carcoal drawings. Pretend is about a girl who imagines an escape from her home, which inevitably leads her into a battle fantasy where she has to defend herself and her mother. Like my other book, Pretend is also sold at Giant Robot stores. Or email me & I'll mail it to you.

journal drawings

These are some older drawings and paintings from a journal that I spend a lot of time doodling in.
